Microsoft releases Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3

Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3 is now available for download and includes improvements in reliability, compatibility, user features, and security. Although Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 was layout complete, based on our customers’ feedback, we’ve made some additional changes to the look and feel of the browser. Beta 3 allows users to add the e-mail button back to the toolbar, enables users to reorder the tabs by dragging them to the left or right, and enables horizontal scrolling while zooming.

To improve the RSS experience, Internet Explorer 7 now allows users to update all their RSS feeds automatically. In addition, the user has more control in marking their RSS feeds as "READ."

Beta 2 testing has helped us improve compatibility with websites and web applications in Beta 3. Internet Explorer 7 reliability has improved in Beta 3 as several layout-rendering bugs have been fixed as well.

In addition, Beta 3 contains all the security fixes addressed in the June Internet Explorer Security Bulletin MS06-021.

An "emotionally aware" computer being developed by MIT and Cambridge

MIT and Cambridge are developing a computer that will be able to read our minds by just analyzing our facial movements. Isn't this just mind-boggling.

"The system we have developed allows a wide range of mental states to be identified just by pointing a video camera at someone," said Professor Peter Robinson of Cambridge University in England."

"Imagine a computer that could pick the right emotional moment to try to sell you something, a future where mobile phones, cars and Web sites could read our mind and react to our moods," he added.

It could also be useful in online teaching to show whether someone understands what is being explained and in improving road safety by determining whether a driver is confused, bored or tired.

Tips: How to customize Word completion feature.

One of the features i use often when i type on my Pocket PC is Word Completion feature. In short it displays a list of possible words based on the first couple of characters you enter. Last week there were some requests from our visitors abou explanation of how to customize this Word Completion features and i decided to wrote some words about it.

By default, Word Completion is configured to suggest one word after you have entered two letters. So if you enter "fr" a popup box will display the word "friend", and when you tap on "friend" it will enter the rest of the letters in the word. But in case the word "friend" is not the word you are looking for, you need to enter the next letter and Word Completion will suggest another word. As you probably know ths method can speed up text entry considerably.

You have the option to change Word Completion to suggest 1 to 4 words after you have entered 1 to 7 letters. If you want to do this you need to open the Start menu, select the Settings option, and tap on the Input icon. When you do this select the Word Completion tab at the bottom of the screen and it will display the appropriate configuration screen.

If you want to have more word choices without entering another letter after the first you need to change the display word feature. I have set it to display 5 words and it works really good. I can also suggest you increase the number of letters entered to 3 or 4 for more predicting accuracy.

I hope this short guide will help you to speed up your text input with your Pocket PC.

How Solitaire drains your battery?

For a couple of days, I noticed that my batteries were draining quite rapidly. Indeed, both batteries went dead after a day of use only. I checked if any software was running in the background and found nothing. Yesterday I found the culprit. Before it all happen, I was playing Solitaire. When I got bored with the game, I naturally closed the application. Yesterday I decided to play Solitaire again and guess what? I started the game and found that the clock was still ticking. In other words, if you don't succesfully end the game or you decide to put it aside in the middle of a game, it doesn't really close. It keeps running in the background...invisible. Even Magic Button did not detect the still running Solitaire. Looks like a bug to me. To avoid that situation, I would tap on the New Game options under Menu and then close the application. It seems to be the only way to properly kill Solitaire.

Motorola has reinvented the add-on extension battery as a USB device. At the Singapore-hosted CommunicAsia 2006 event this week, it unveiled the Portable Power P970 gadget, a power pack that plugs into any device with a mini USB port either to recharge the host or provide current immediately.

Free: New menu for WM5

With Windows Mobile 5, the NEW menu has disappeared. Remember, in previous versions of Windows Mobile, you could create new documents, spreadsheets, contacts or send email from the Today screen. Microsoft has replaced it with two softkeys in WM5. But you can change that by downloading this application, WM5NewMenu. The Application is fully configurable. Tips: Disable error reporting and your device runs faster

The error reporting feature on your device may be a good way in helping Microsoft fix bugs or any problems you might encounter. However, That slows down your device up to the point that it’s almost impossible to use them. Error reporting is enabled by default. Having to navigate through several windows on your Pocket PC to activate Bluetooth can be quite annoying, especially if you are in a hurry. There is a quicker way to that with a push of a button. First download the the bluetooth toggle. Copy the .cab file to your device anf tap on it to install. Then proceed to Start > Settings > Button and assign the program to a button of your choice.

MIT developing a super battery

With all the sophisticated gadgets hitting the market, it was necessary that a new battery technology be developed. Presently, it's infernally annoying to have to wait for hours for a battery to recharge and after much recharge and discharge, the battery ultimately dies and needs to be replaced. MIT is currently working on a new generation of battery that takes only seconds to recharge, lasts longer and does not need to be replaced. Basically, this means that we won't have to throw away our batteries, which is better for the environment, and will considerably reduce our battery consumption.

The MIT folks expect to produce the first prototype in the upcoming months. However, we won't see these batteries on the market before five years. We've waited long enough, so five years...

PocketLearn Transform Mobile Phones Into Learning Tools

Technology startup PocketLearn Inc has introduced a suite of software products that enable many cellular telephones and personal digital assistants or “PDA's” to become mobile tools for learning. Among the products are special “Viewers” that are installed on the devices, as well as Windows based content creation tools. PocketLearn has initially targeted Windows Mobile devices such as the Pocket PC and Smartphone, as well as Java phones. “It's not widely advertised, but almost all mobile phones today will run Java software. This means that if your device is a true “smart” device that meets the minimum requirements, you can run the software”, said company founder, Jorge Pando. So far, cell phone viruses haven’t been much of a threat. The vast majority of viruses don’t do any damage at all; they simply aim to prove that such threats can exist and spread. The first Windows Mobile virus, Duts, simply asked the device owner for permission to spread. Another, a backdoor named Brador, could give attackers access to the files on the device, though it wasn’t much of a threat in practice. In February, the first crossover virus, aptly named Cxover, appeared. Cxover was designed to leap from infecting a PC to infecting, and then destroying documents, on a Windows Mobile device. Tips: Backup your device with Activesync

The procedures below apply to PPC/Smartphone running Windows Mobile 2003 or earlier only. You won't see the Backup/Restore option when a WM5 mobile is connected.

2. Double-click the Microsoft ActiveSync Icon located in your Windows System Tray
   Microsoft ActiveSync will Open. From here, click the "Tools" menu and then click "Backup / Restore..."
   
3. The "Backup/Restore" dialog box will appear. Make sure to click "Full backup" and then click "Back Up Now"
   
4. Your Entire Pocket PC will now be backed up, Including your settings, programs, data, contacts, etc.
   
5. You have successfully made a backup of your Pocket PC!

Tips: Set WAV file as SMS notification.

I received an email from someone who wanted to know how to set MP3 as sms notifications. This is not possible because only wav files can be set as sms notifications. Simply copy your wav file to the root of the Windows folder, then go to the notification page and select the file from the list.
