Tips: Add disconnect button to connectivity balloon

If you do not have the ability to disconnect an internet connection right from the Connectivity balloon, this tip is for you.
Run a Registry Editor, or get one, and go to HKLM\Control Panel\Phone\Flags2 and change the value to 8. I recommend you perform a soft reset. To remove the button change the value to 0.

Tips: Activesync and Vista

I answered a post today on Windows Mobile Owners Circle Forum from a member who wanted to know how tweak Vista to support Activesync. After posting a reply there, I decided to post something about this here. Let it be known that Vista does not support Activesync because it comes loaded with Windows Mobile Device Center 6.0. There is no way to make Activesync work with Vista. I also recommend that you download the latest version of WMDC, which is version 6.1 on Microsoft's website.

Tips: How to backup a .Pst file in Outlook?

There will come a time where you will need to uninstall Outlook on your PC because you are unable to sync. Checking the status in Activesync will show a Support code 0x85010014. Removing Outlook is an easy thing to do - Simply go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. What about the data in Outlook? It is important to make a backup of your pst file so you can recover your data after re-installation; All this without the need of backup software. How? Follow the steps below to save your data to a pst file and then proceed to the uninstall and re-install of Outlook.

1. In Outlook, click File > Import & Export, to start the Import & Export Wizard.

2. Select Export to a File and click Next.

3. Select Personal folder file (.pst) as the file type and click Next.

4. Select your mailbox if you want to export all folders. Make sure that you select "Include Subfolders. Click Next.

5. Select the path where you want to save the file. Select any option you need under Options and click Finish. This is it.

6. After you're done re-installing Outlook, use the same steps to re-connect to your .pst file. At step 2, select Import from.

Anti-Mosquito software for Pocket PC

Mosquito Defence is a small application for Pocket PC that pretends it can protect from Female mosquitoes bites. According to the author, male mosquitoes do not bite.
Mosquito Defence plays a special ultrasonic frequencies to keep the mosquitoes away. I don't know if it really works and I can't try it either. It's winter here. If any of you do, please post your results in the comment area.

If your device is branded HTC TyTN, head over to to HTC website and log on to the HTc Club and download the upgrade. For those of you who have a variant of the device, do not even try because you are required to provide your IMIE.
If, like me, you own a HTC S620, be patient. It won't be long before we finally get the upgrade.

Tips: Activesync Support Code 0x85010014

If you ever come across this support code while synchronizing your device, the problem is most likely with Outlook.
I usually recommend performing a Detect & Repair in Outlook first. This feature is hidden under the Help menu. If that does not fix it, only then I recommend to completely uninstall and reinstall Outlook. Of course, make sure that you have a backup of your data. In the next tip, I'll post about what, according to me, is the best and easiest way to perform a backup of the .Pst file; This is the file that holds all data related to your Email, Calendar, Contacts etc.

Tips: How to select multiple Contacts for deletion?

This tip applies to Pocket PCs only. Multiple selection of Contacts is not built into Windows Mobile. Therefore, multiple deletion is not possible. With PPCContactsMgr v1.6, it is now possible to do that and beam several contacts or add them at once to the SIM card. This application is, you will agree, a must have. Tips: How to change the font color of the Today screen?

A lot of devices uses white as the default font color on the Today screen. It's not a problem as long as the background utilizes a "heavy" color. It does become problematic when using a picture as background because Windows Mobile will reduce the color to something that looks like gray. Thus, reading the Today becomes a strain for the eye.
There is a registry key that can be modified to change the font color to something else than white. This must be done after having modified the background.
In the registry go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Color\4. Change the value to "00 00 00 00" for black or "00 00 FF 00" for blue.

PC World publishes top 10 cell phone-PDAs

PC World has published a list of their top 10 devices actually on the market. RIM Blackberry Curve tops the list followed by two Windows Mobile powered devices from T-Mobile, namely the Wing and the Dash. Note that the list contains 4 devices powered by Windows Mobile and the other two are the Blackjack (6) and the Cingular 8525 (7). The iPhone is ranked fifth. Not a single Palm's device made it to the list though. Tips: Some appointments do not sync

I'm a member on some forums and very often I came across threads where users are having issues synchronizing some appointments from the device to the PC.
You will certainly agree that this is weird while the other appointments get synchronize properly.
I've figured out this is happening because those appointments that are not synchronizing are recurring events and they do not contain and end date. Set the end date and it will sync properly. This solution worked each time I answered to similar queries across the different forums I'm a member of.

Tips: Disable SMS Sent Notification

For some users, the notification that pops up after each SMS is sent is simply annoying. There is a way to disable that notification and a registry tweak is required. Therefore be careful.
Fire up your registry editor and go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings. Create an new Dword value and name it "SMSNoSentMsg" with a value of 1. Set it to 0 if you wamt to re-enable it. If you do not see the Settings key, just create a new key and name it Settings. Test it; no more Message Sent notification.

O2 releases WM6 upgrade for O2 Xda Trion

Foxit, a new pdf reader for smartphone announced

Foxit Reader for Windows mobile, is a small program that claims to load pdf files faster than any software on the market. The download size of the file itself is "less than 1MB". Tips: Add a new currency to Windows Mobile

By default, the Currency tab in Regional Settings has only the Dollar and Euro as currency. This list can be modified to include more currencies. However, not all currencies have symbols. Take the rupee for example (the rupee is the unit of money in Mauritius), it is represented by "Rs.". Let's add Rs. to the currency list for use in Excel Mobile for example.

On your device, click Start - Settings - System - Regional Settings - Currency tab.

Tap to select the Currency Symbol dropdown list.

Using the on screen keyboard, tap Rs. or your currency and tap enter.

You have just set your unit of money as the default currency on your device.

Press the triangle in the Currency Symbol Drop down list and you will notice that two arrows have been added.

Click on them to move up and down and you will see the $ and € including the one you've added.

To verify that Rs. is indeed the default currency, open Excel Mobile and enter a number in any cell.

Tap and hold on the cell that contains the number until a menu appears and select Format Cells.

Tap the Number tab. Select Currency from the Category list and the sample displays the new default currency.

This tip applies to Windows Mobile Pocket PC edition and Smartphone Edition.

Asus releases WM6 upgrades

Asus is second, Eten was first, to release free Windows Mobile 6 upgrades for the A626, A686 and A696. The upgrades are available for download at http://support.asus.com/download/Download.aspx. Still no word from HTC so far. I've been told they are still weeks away to the release. It's a shame...

Tips: Selecting non-contiguous emails

It is possible to make multiple selection of emails in Outlook Mobile. To be able to do so really renders the cleaning up of the inbox fast and easy. For a non-contiguous selection, simply tap on the "CTL" key on the on-screen keyboard and select, with a single tap, the emails you want to delete or move. This is it.

Automatic internet setup with HTC Network Wizard

If you happen to travel often, you must certainly have experienced the situation where you had to switch sim card in order to avoid roaming fees. Where this becomes a pain, is when you have to configure your phone with new internet settings. Easily said than done, since this can

Tips: Switch the clock from digital to analog

Did you know that the clock at the top of your screen on your pda can be switched to analog? To do that, simply tap and hold on the clock and a menu will appear where you can choose to do the switch. The analog clock is difficult to read at a glance though.

I thought it would be nice to offer a "money saver" access to the blog through Skweezer. What is Skweezer? It's simply a free service that optimizes web pages for viewing on cellphones and PDAs. Free: MyMobilizer to control your device with your desktop keyboard and mouse.

In the mobile world one has the choice between a thumb keyboard, a stylus and voice for data entry. There's also portable keyboards as well. I'm sure you wouldn't mind using your desktop keyboard and mouse when connected to your PC to type an email, edit a word document or, simply put, take control of your device right from your computer's screen. There are quite a few solutions out there that lets you do that and the latest I came across is MyMobilizer. I have played with it for 30 mins and while it does what it says, I noticed it was quite slow. But surely 30 mins is not enough to discover its full potential. Easy Sync 2.8 lets you copy files bigger than 100Mb

Previous versions of Easy Sync did not let you copy big files to your storage card if its size was bigger than the available main memory on the device. SPB releases Mobile shell update

This is one of the best application on my Eten M500 as it lets me access Everything from my Today screen using my thumb. No iPhone or HTC Touch needed. SPB Softwarehouse has released an update today. However I haven't installed and tested it yet. As per their website, they added a smart Contact Search to it and the display of the weekly view of the calendar right on the main screen. If you do not have Mobile Shell yet, you might want to try it at http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/mobileshell/?en. It's really worth it.

Opera Mini 4 Beta released

Point your browser to Opera's website to download Opera Mini 4 beta. I’m testing it on my HTC S620 and will post a short review soon. The Wow about it is the speed with which it loads pages. I did experience a few freezes though. Head over to Opera’s website and download a copy. You don’t have to worry about your current Opera Mini installation. Imate announces the WM5 powered Imate Jama Pocket PC Phone

Dear readers, you are most likely aware that Microsoft has changed the naming scheme of Windows Mobile devices with the release of Windows Mobile 6. For example, the Pocket PC Phone edition is now known as Windows Mobile Professional edition. You may also have noticed that the title of this post still refers to Pocket PC phone edition. This is because Imate, once a Windows Mobile major player, has announced the Jama, their latest Pocket PC phone running... Windows Mobile 5. I don't know how the marketing dept of Imate works, but it is certainly out of sync with the Windows Mobile market trend. So, dear Imate, customers are either looking for Windows Mobile 6 upgrades for their devices or getting ready to acquire such devices as the HTC Touch or the T-Mobile Wing among others.

According to Mobinaute, a french website, YouTube Mobile should be available for our devices by next year. This announcement was made by Steve Chen, co-founder of YouTube, during Computex conference in Taiwan. note that, until the release of YouTube Mobile, you can download a workaround provided by SourceForge here.

Tips: Save money with Opera Mini

Opera mini is one of the most popular mobile browser on the market and it is free. Besides this, if properly configured, Opera Mini can help you save money and load web pages faster. How? Simple. If you already run Opera Mini on your Pocket PC or Smartphone, simply go to Menu - Tools - Settings and uncheck Load Images and Higher Image Quality. This will reduce webpages size by half, load faster and, of course, save money on your data plan. We would all welcome such features in Internet Explorer Mobile. Don't you think?

Tips: How to prevent Activesync from automatically synchronizing data?

By default or by design, Activesync will automatically sync any changes you make to your PC or device once connected. If your device remains connected to your PC all day, every minute or so, AS will pop up and sync. This can be quite annoying, especially if you're using your device for, say, typing an email. Synchronization will slow your device. Since there is no built-in feature to stop this behaviour, Activesync Toggle is a simple add on that will let you decide when to load Microsoft Activesync. WMDC 6.1 released

As previously announced here, Microsoft has released an updated version of Windows Mobile Device Center. If you're running Windows Vista, then you might want to download it at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx. But do not rush for it yet. Even if this upgrade is to fix some bugs, it might have some of its own. Unless you're having serious issues with WMDC, I recommend you wait a bit before upgrading.

Q&A: IE Mobile cannot access intranet site

Q: I want to access my intranet website using dial up networking with
SmartPhone/ PDA / Pocket PC.

I've tried with O2 mini (windows mobile 2003), the dial up was successful but I
cannot access my intranet website using Internet Explorer Mobile. How can I fix that?

A: This is probably happening because Mobile IE is searching for the intranet
site on the internet rather than your intranet. To connect to intranet
URLs, you need to enter them as Work URL Exceptions. To do this, go to
Start - Settings - Connections - Advanced tab - Click Exceptions button.

Tap Add new URL... And
create a new URL Exception by typing the link to your intranet site.

Get organized with this user friendly list Manager from SBSH. All lists are organized in categories that can be created from pre-defined templates. Easy Sync 2.6 released

If you're looking for an alternative to Microsoft Activesync, then you should consider EasySync. It has more features than AS, like, for example, the ability to sync any number of files. Meaning, you can sync one file only. Another great feature of EasySync is the ability to sync to the Storage card. If you have already upgraded to Windows Vista, then you should know that Device Center has some bugs. An upgrade will be made available in the weeks to come by Microsoft.
